Border Auriculas

Border auriculas are classified among the ‘Garden auriculas’ as they are bred to be vigorous, free-flowering plants that are often scented. They come in a huge variety of colours, some with powdery leaves, some with bright green rounded or crenelated leaves. Barnhaven has been breeding Border auriculas for many years and we have developed our own seed strains. We also have named Border cultivars in our collection. Some of which have been selected from our own seed strains if they are outstanding and many of which are old cultivars, mainly from English breeders.

Flowering period: Mid-spring- early summer.

Culture: They are very easy to grow as long as you ensure they are in a free-draining spot in part-shade. They look best in large pots, troughs or planted in groups at the edge of a border or rockery. They can be divided every two or three years as they tend to get a bit leggy. Some will cultivars will produce quite a lot of seed.

  • Barnhaven Strains

Barnhaven have been growing Border auriculas for over half a century and we pride ourselves on maintaining our reputation for hardy, easy to grow auriculas in a stunning array of forms and colours. We hand-pollinate our border auriculas every year in separate colour strains from carefully selected plants to ensure there are always new additions to our stock. The plants you find here are all produced from these seed stains and are all unnamed unique plants. There will be a mixture of pin and thrum flowers.

    Height: 10 - 20cm.

Flowering period: Mid spring - early summer.

Culture: They are very easy to grow in the garden as long as you ensure they are in a free-draining spot in part-shade. Watch out for slugs and snails. It can help to put some sharp grit round the base of the plants. Good plants for troughs or larger containers, rockeries and well-drained borders in a partial shade.

  • Named Border auriculas

Border auriculas are traditionally garden-worthy plants that are vigorous, sweet-smelling, floriferous plants. Here you have a selection of named cultivars (multiplied by division). You will find a few Barnhaven named plants which we have selected from our seed strains as being especially different or outstanding growers. There are also some very old named cultivars of historical value and many other new cultivars from Val Woolley's collection in the UK.

    Height: 10 - 20cm.

Flowering period: Mid - late spring.

Culture: Grow Border auriculas in pots or in a well-drained border in semi-shade. They will light up the early spring days from April to June, depending on the weather conditions. They will benefit from regular dividing and feeding.
