
Also known as the Red Hot Poker primrose, Primula vialii is perhaps the most easily recognisable of the common primulas. Its mauve flowers are held in a crowded spike about 6 - 8 inches long on a foot high stem. The calyces are a brilliant red. A spike in bud is red, but as the flowers open a striking contrast is revealed between the mauve base and the red apex. Not very long lived in the garden (about two or three years) but is very easy to grow from seed.
